"This booklet was inspired by extensive original research carried out by Fred Hamond and John Feehan on behalf of Laois Heritage Forum. The entire survey, An Ecological and Industrial Heritage Survey of the Mountmellick Canal, Laois County Council 2006, is available online at www.laois.ie/heritage.

Additional insights into the history of the Mountmellick Canal came from a number of people living on or near the canal line in Mountmellick and Portarlington, including Una Bloomer, Bill Lawlor, Ronnie Mathews, Peg Moran, Catherine McCann, Loftus Odlum and Eleanor Russell.

This project was overseen by a working group of the Laois Heritage Forum, made up of Teddy Fennelly and Mary Lalor. The Inland Waterways Association of Ireland and Kildare County Council also provided vital assistance during the preparation of the original survey."
